OK, we all knew Dean Solomon would be copped with a heavy suspension, but 8 weeks? That's way over the top to me. Sure he has a bad record, but so does Barry Hall. How is it that Hall gets 7 weeks and Solomon 8? Doesn't make sense.

For those people who say that Solomon had more time to consider his actions... umm, no! Hall was facing 180 degrees from Staker, turned around and threw a punch. Solomon was running at Ling and in the last instance, raised his elbow about 45 degrees. OK, kind of hard to explain in words, but compare both on video and you get the picture.

Both were split-micro-second decisions. Both should have been and have been suspensions. I just don't get it how Solomon got more. Am I missing something here?

I agree...in the words of great Denis Commetti ... "I'm confused"

Its a ton when you consider he will now miss over a 3rd of a season, having said that you have to feel for Ling who will miss 4 weeks through no choice of his own.

Yeah, fair point. You definitely do feel for Ling. But having said that, is that what tribunal verdicts should be based on - the severity of the injury caused?

For example, they've cracked down hard on anything head-high, so if your typical head-high hip-and-shoulder that usually sees a 1 or 2 week penalty results in a bloke been paralysed and out of the game for life, do you seriously give a harsher penalty? I think not. You can't base it on the severity of the injury. It just doesn't work.

Since Ling is set to miss 4 weeks, the minimum penalty should have been 4.  I think this shows more leniancy towards Halls suspension than it shows severity of Solomon's.

What it comes down to is the severity of the injury sustained by the player at the wrong end of the punch, elbow etc...
Bazza Hall's punch whilst being a complete brain snap did no real damage to Staker other than leave him with a sore head.
Dean Soloman on the other hand left Ling with a fractured face.

Both Hall and Soloman are thugs. They play tough and should not feel the need to hit unprotected players. The penanly whilst severe is definately warranted given his past indiscretions.

I fear this will be the end for Soloman. Will Freo re-sign him...I doubt it.

Yeh, but what if your typical head-high hip-and-shoulder injures someone for life? You cannot punish based on the injury sustained!

When determining the verdict, one must also consider the intent of the reported player. No player ever goes out of his way to disable or kill another.

Yeh, and intent is very different to the severity of the final injury. I don't think Solomon intended for Ling to be sidelined for 3-6 weeks!

I dont think the injury caused has anything to do with it.  If Bazza had of connected anywhere else on Stakers face there would have been more damage.  As it was he got around the ears which can be dagerous but hard to break anything.  Solly's contact was probablly not as hard as Bazza's punch but got ling on one of the softest bones in the face.  That shouldn't come into account in the penalty given.  Solly had a heap of points carryiing over and with the grading system it just multiplies.  Its a stupid system at times but they have to be seen as protecting the players, even thought the game is know world wide for being a hard contact game.

By the way Harvey came out and said Solly was a required player for next year.  Not sure what that means, usually when they say that about a coach he is busy looking through the classifieds the following week

He's about as "required" as Matty Lloyd's grass toss with the roof closed at Telstra Dome...
